Romeo and Juliet! This classic story is hundreds of years old, but you’d be hard pressed to find someone who doesn’t know the tale. It is a story that, despite its age, still resonates with people both young and old as a tale of love, sorrow, rivalry and tragedy. These qualities and the relevance of the story today is just one of the reasons we were excited to work with Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) to produce coverage of a Live Lesson schools broadcast.
RSC Live Lessons give school students an insight into how a world renowned theatre company decipher and analyse text, which are hundreds of years old, making them relevant in the modern age. This is a project our team were incredibly excited to work on and produce.
This interesting project was broadcast from inside the RSC Rehearsal rooms and was the first time cameras had been allowed inside the venue to broadcast live lesson. The RSC team were in the early stage of their rehearsal process which allowed our schools audience to see just how the actors can develop the play.
The broadcast featured Georgia Munnion (Presenter), Erika Whyman (Deputy Artistic Director), Bally Gill (Romeo) and Karen Fishwick (Juliet) and focused on the famous ‘Balcony Scene’. Our team was made up of industry professionals Kimberly Walker (Director), Paul Davies (Camera Supervisor), Katherine Jewkes (Producer & Floor Manager), Ryan Davies, Davy Charles and Alex Doherty alongside Jay Rozanski (Producer), oXyFire regular Simon Taylor (Graphics Operator) and Matt Bridger supporting from back in the office.
The broadcast ran smoothly and the content was an insightful lesson for the schools and colleges watching. With a tonne of audience interaction via twitter, the event felt like one large connected lesson rather than the broadcast. We look forward to working with the RSC on more projects like this and increasing the reach and scope of these events. We are also looking forward to working with social media interaction in our events and broadcasts more as we move forward in 2018.
