Case Study

Keratin Revolution Product Photography

Studio product photography, selection and post production for Keratin Revolution, delivered as high resolution editorial assets on the day of the shoot.

The Challenge

White packaging, a bright finish and a same day deadline

Revolution Hair Concepts needed clean, premium product imagery for four products in its Keratin Revolution Illuminate range, including files for an immediate editorial deadline.

The predominantly white packaging needed enough shape and separation to remain clear on a bright background, while individual assets also had to combine into a consistent group composition.

The Solution

Test, photograph, retouch and deliver in one workflow

We planned individual product shots with studio photographer Alwin Greyson, secured approval on a test image and directed the visual treatment before selecting and retouching the final files.

High resolution TIFF and PNG assets were supplied to Pro Hair Magazine that evening. The client approved the work for our website, and later returned for files suitable for large format billboard use.

Four products prepared for one consistent visual system

The studio brief covered four products in the Keratin Revolution Illuminate range: Clarifying Shampoo, Ultra Smooth, Finishing Mask and Argan Oil. Each item needed to work as an individual asset and as part of a combined range image.

We recommended photographing the products separately before assembling the group composition. That approach preserved flexibility for editorial layouts, seasonal artwork and later formats, with each use able to select its own crop and arrangement.

Test, photograph, select and retouch

The shoot took place at Alwin Greyson’s studio on 11 November 2014. Alwin photographed the products while we brought the range, directed the visual treatment and managed the client facing selection and approval process.

A test image was approved before the full set proceeded. Raw files then moved through Dropbox into our post production workflow, where the team retouched the individual products and developed the combined composition.

Same day high resolution delivery for editorial use

The finished high resolution TIFF and PNG files were delivered to Pro Hair Magazine on the evening of the shoot. Deputy and Online Editor Sarah George confirmed that the images met the immediate editorial need.

Revolution Hair Concepts CEO Ben Collins also approved the finished images.

Files made to remain useful beyond one placement

The value of the individual high resolution product assets became clear later. In 2015, the client returned for the largest originals when a distributor needed graphics suitable for billboard use and asked whether we could support future product photography work.

The request demonstrates the longevity of the photography and post production. The original masters could return to the workflow for a much larger output while preserving detail in the packaging and retouching. Careful file preparation at the first delivery protected that later flexibility.

Separate packshots created layout flexibility

Photographing each product independently meant the visual treatment could be judged on its own terms. The white bottles needed controlled highlights, clean edges and enough tonal separation to hold their shape against a pale background.

Once those individual files had been selected and retouched, we could arrange them into a group composition with consistent scale and spacing. The same masters could also support single product editorial placements. Three of those tall, transparent background originals survive today at 1000 by 3333 pixels, demonstrating the resolution retained in the production workflow.

Transparent backgrounds also allowed designers to position the bottles against campaign artwork while maintaining clean product edges. That flexibility gave the client a practical library of assets as well as the immediately required magazine image.

Approval points kept a tight schedule controlled

The client saw and approved a test shot before the complete set was photographed. That decision established the lighting and finish early, giving Alwin Greyson and our team a confirmed direction for the remaining products.

After the shoot, Dropbox moved the raw material into selection and retouching while the magazine deadline was still active. Delivering the editorial files that evening required the studio, client and post production stages to connect cleanly. The written responses from both the editor and client confirm that the final assets arrived in usable form and met the intended standard.
