Chester Zoo Bloom: TV Advert Production and Sound Design
A sound-led animated TV commercial for Chester Zoo’s Bloom campaign, produced for national distribution with Clearcast clearance, broadcast delivery and an online version.
Making an illustrated world feel alive in 20 seconds
Chester Zoo’s Bloom campaign needed a 20-second television and online advert that could make its illustrated spring world feel alive immediately. The film had to introduce gardens, birds and native wildlife, guide viewers through the supplied artwork and land the final campaign message with warmth and clarity.
Sound was central to that task. With only seconds available, voiceover, music and effects had to create atmosphere and momentum while restrained animation supported the journey.
A sound-led television and online advert
We produced a sound-led animated commercial, building voiceover, music, effects, camera movement, ink bleeds, mattes and small character details into one carefully timed piece.
We produced the TV advert for national distribution, managed its Clearcast clearance and prepared the broadcast master for delivery through IMD, alongside the version used online. The completed film became part of Chester Zoo’s Gold-winning 2014 Bloom campaign.

TV advert production for national distribution
Chester Zoo’s 2014 Bloom campaign celebrated the gardens, birds and UK wildlife that visitors could discover alongside its better-known animals. Front Ideas commissioned our TV advert production team to turn the supplied illustrated world into a 20-second commercial for national distribution, with an online version extending the campaign beyond broadcast.
The official Chester Zoo 2014 Zoo Review records Bloom launching in February as a season celebrating gardens, birds and UK wildlife. It became a record-breaking year for the zoo, with 1,432,867 visitors and membership reaching 57,835. Our film brought that ambitious public-facing campaign to television and online audiences, capturing its sense of discovery in just 20 seconds.
Sound had to make twenty seconds feel alive
Sound design carried the atmosphere and emotional movement of the advert. We combined voiceover, music and carefully placed effects to create a spring world that seemed to wake up around the viewer, giving the film warmth, pace and a natural journey towards the final message.
The animation supported that soundtrack. A restrained camera pass, ink bleeds, animated mattes and masking guided attention through the illustration, while details such as the landing bee and its shadow reinforced moments that had already been established in sound.
Building picture and sound together
We developed a detailed design document before finishing began, then worked through briefing, design, camera planning, animation, sound effects, client refinement and the final mix. Keeping picture and sound together throughout the process allowed every movement to serve the rhythm of the advert.
We produced and directed the project with motion graphics, editing and production colleagues. It was an early example of the joined-up approach that now shapes our animation production, where the soundtrack, visual treatment and delivery route are planned as parts of one film.
Preparing the television commercial for broadcast
Television distribution brought an additional layer of scrutiny. We took the commercial through Clearcast clearance, the process used to assess UK television advertising against the Broadcast Committee of Advertising Practice Code, including the evidence supporting statements made in the advert.
From the outset, we developed the commercial for national television distribution. We managed the Clearcast process, ensuring the advert’s claims and final execution were ready for broadcast, then delivered the approved television master through IMD. We also supplied an online version that extended the campaign across digital channels.
From final mix to an award-winning campaign
We delivered the finished commercial in HD at 1920 × 1080. Front Ideas had clear approval points throughout production, allowing the soundtrack, timing and visual emphasis to be refined together before the final mix and master were closed.
Chester Zoo’s official Bloom upload was published on 3 March 2014 and remains available to watch. The advert formed part of the wider Bloom campaign, which went on to win Gold at the 2014 Fresh Awards, giving this small, sound-led film a place within award-winning creative work for one of the UK’s best-known visitor attractions.
