British Airways Outstanding Leaders: Elearning Drama Production
The Challenge

Turning leadership learning into believable drama

British Airways and LINE Communications needed 30 minutes of modular drama for Outstanding Leaders, a learning programme built around complex workplace scenarios and defined learning outcomes.

The filmed material had to feel engaging as drama while remaining precise enough to work inside a wider programme of workshops and online and offline learning activities.

The Solution

Thirty minutes of modular learning drama

Working with director and writer Virginia Heath, producer Jay Rozanski and the oXyFire team developed 30 minutes of modular drama for the programme.

Outstanding Leaders later received silver at the 2012 Elearning Awards in the private sector learning content category. British Airways and LINE received the award for the wider programme. We produced its filmed content.

30 MINUTES OF DRAMA

The filmed layer inside Outstanding Leaders

Outstanding Leaders combined filmed scenarios with workshops and online and offline activities. British Airways and LINE Communications developed the learning programme with ORConsulting.

Within that structure, we created 30 minutes of modular HD drama. Each short scene carried a specific leadership situation and learning outcome, giving the programme flexible filmed material for different activities.

Dramatic scenarios shaped around learning outcomes

Director and Writer Virginia Heath led the story and performance work, with Jay Rozanski producing. We developed the video and audio material in collaboration with LINE, turning complex workplace situations into concise filmed scenarios.

This learning led approach affected the production from the start. The actors and story beats needed to feel believable, and each sequence needed enough clarity to support discussion and activity elsewhere in the programme. It is an early example of our elearning film production work.

A silver award for the wider programme

Outstanding Leaders later received silver at the 2012 Elearning Awards in the category Excellence in the production of learning content: private sector. The recognised organisations were British Airways and LINE Communications.

We made and developed the filmed content within the award winning programme. British Airways and LINE retained the award identity for the wider learning project, while a public LINE record also credits ORConsulting’s role in the wider learning design.

An early learning film built for private delivery

We produced the learning films in 2011, working from actor call sheets and storyboards to organise the dramatic scenarios. The wider programme received its silver award in 2012.

The complete drama was distributed through British Airways’ internal learning system. Its audience and placement were defined by the learning programme, and the footage remains within that private learning context.

Why a modular production suited the learning design

Thirty minutes of drama represented a substantial content package, yet the programme could deploy it in smaller units. A scene could introduce a leadership dilemma, give learners a shared point of reference and create space for discussion before the next activity.

That modular design also gave the wider programme control over pace. Different scenarios could be selected for a workshop or digital activity while retaining consistent characters, performance standards and picture quality. The filming therefore served a repeatable learning structure as well as a single viewing experience.

For the production team, consistency across the short dramas was essential. Performance, sound and visual treatment needed to feel part of the same world even when the learning design placed the scenes in different parts of the programme.

Creative and production roles working to one brief

Virginia Heath’s direction and writing connected performance with the programme’s learning intent. Jay Rozanski’s producer role coordinated the filmed work, while we developed the audio and video material with LINE Communications.

We managed the work through careful planning, review and permission. Call sheets and storyboards organised the actor work, distribution remained inside the British Airways learning environment, and LINE reviewed the public wording when the programme received its later award. That process connected creative planning, production and controlled communication.
