Sheffield Hallam Graduate Fashion Show: Fashion Film Production
Recorded film production for Sheffield Hallam’s circular Graduate Fashion Show, shaped into two minute and eight minute edits through attended post production.
Capturing a circular fashion presentation
Sheffield Hallam University staged its 2016 Graduate Fashion Show in a circular layout at the Millennium Gallery on 17 June. The production needed to preserve the collection and the relationship between models and audience across its changing viewpoints.
The commission centred on recorded fashion film production and a full post production workflow. The university wanted both a concise two minute film and an eight minute version with room for more of the show.
Event capture shaped through an attended edit
We filmed the dress rehearsal and evening event, then brought a portable edit suite to the university so the course team could take part in an attended post production session. This gave the client direct involvement in structure and selection.
The two minute cut used contemporary chromatic, twitch and reverse treatments, while both finished films were colour graded and sound mixed. Final masters were delivered after versioned review, and the course leader described the result as a good representation of the year’s show.

A circular fashion presentation
Sheffield Hallam University’s 2016 Graduate Fashion Show took place at the Millennium Gallery on 17 June. Its circular layout placed garments, models and audience in a shared visual space and gave the film a distinctive structure.
Sheffield Hallam commissioned us to record the show and complete the films through a full post production workflow. The final package comprised a concise two minute film and an extended eight minute version.
A full post production route
The university selected a full post production process for both films. This created dedicated time for editorial selection, music, colour and sound, allowing the story to develop through considered review and finishing.
The production schedule included the afternoon dress rehearsal as well as the evening show. Capturing both created more opportunity to build coherent sequences around the circular presentation and its changing viewpoints.
An attended edit kept the course team close to the film
We brought a portable edit suite to the client, allowing Fashion Design Course Leader Nathan Jones and Jane Blohm to take part in an attended post production session. The approach made selection, structure and detailed editorial decisions collaborative.
We also sourced equivalent music for the films. The shorter edit received a contemporary visual treatment through carefully judged chromatic aberration, twitch and reverse effects, while the longer version preserved more of the graduate collection and the event’s progression.
Two finished films, colour graded and sound mixed
The final two minute and eight minute cuts were colour graded and sound mixed before delivery. Versioned review links gave the university a clear route through feedback and approval, and the completed masters were then supplied as downloadable files.
Nathan Jones described the finished work as a good representation of that year’s show. The result demonstrates how our video production can move from event capture into an authored fashion film, using post production to express the character and progression of a graduate collection.
A film package for different viewing needs
The two minute cut gave the course team a compact overview of the graduate show, while the eight minute version held more of the collection and the event’s progression. Both versions shared the same finished colour and sound treatment.
Delivering two durations created a flexible film package from one production day. The concise edit could introduce the collection quickly, and the extended film gave the work and presentation more room on screen.
The schedule created room for creative coverage
The production day began around the 14:00 dress rehearsal, several hours before doors opened at 19:15. This gave the team an early view of the circular staging, garment movement and show rhythm before the audience entered the Millennium Gallery.
The evening performance then supplied the atmosphere and audience relationship at the heart of the finished films. Combining rehearsal access with the live show gave the edit a broader visual vocabulary and supported the different pacing required by the two minute and eight minute versions.
